Please Donate To SCMM 2008
« on: April 28, 2008, 09:29:08 PM »

Dear friends,

As most of you know, we did away with annual membership dues in 2006.  Starting this year, we will begin a new club fund-raising goal by asking members to donate to the club.  I reach out to all club members by beseeching you all to make a financial donation to the club.  Every donation, no matter what size, will help make a difference! I sincerely invite everyone who enjoys the fun and camaraderie of SCMM to please make a donation to help our club continue to put on great events for our members.

Please contribute and help us raise money for SCMM. You can donate by either sending checks to: SCMM, PO Box 5353, Playa Del Rey CA 90296, or you can donate by PayPal by going to this webpage: http://www.scmm.org/donate

Your generosity and support will be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Lex Adams

P.S. Please include your mailing address if you donate via Paypal.  We would like to send you a thank you.

I know that when there's a fund raising event on television and radio, challenges are made to help people's motivation to contribute.

That being said..."I challenge all fellow Mini modders to match my contribution of $100.00"...our next mod will have to wait a little longer but heck it's for a treiffic club.

Have we considered bringing back the membership cost.  Say $18 a year or something like that?  Most clubs have some kind of membership fee

The short answer to that question is "no".

Although annual dues would bring in welcomed funds, they also create a tremendous amount of administrative work for the person(s) responsible for notifying members, recording payments, sending reminders, etc.

We still have a one-time $25 memership fee to join the club, which includes a welcome package, swag, access to the message boards, etc.

The club operates on a very modest budget with all of its money going towards club activities and member benefits.  SCMM officers receive no compensation for their work.

We've been able to maintain a healthy club treasury since eliminating renewal dues back in 2006 through other means of fund raising, such as club raffles, swag sales, newsletter ads.  The idea of offering a way for members to donate money directly to club has been floating around for some time, we just now have gotten around to implementing it.

For some of us newbies here, what ongoing costs does the club have, outside of the website?

I am about to rush out the door and head home from work but I wanted to respond in short.

First, I am astounded by the number of donations that we have received so far.  I am very appreciative of the generosity shown by our members.  Thank you so much.

Have we considered bringing back the membership cost.  Say $18 a year or something like that?  Most clubs have some kind of membership fee
Yes, we have considered and I have been opposed to it.  The 2006 SCMM leadership made a decision on what they thought was best for the club, and they made a promise to everyone about a one time membership fee for a lifetime membership.  I plan on honoring that commitment to all our club members.  Until we have exhausted every other possibility of raising money, I will not consider re-implementing any annual "required" dues.

In my first year, my strategy of over-coming the loss in recurring dues was to increase our membership numbers.  We went from 465 online members to 683 in less than a year and a half.  We were doing well until the Santa Anita Anniversary bash.  Although Santa Anita raised their prices significantly, the SCMM leadership did not want our members to have to pay more than they had in the past, so the club ate a bigger portion of the cost to help subsidize this important club event.  SCMM cares about our members, and if we can lessen any expense burden for our members to enjoy and participate in club events then we will.  Yes, fundraising for the club has been a challenge but it's a challenge that can be achieved.  I hope everyone will join me in this challenge and celebrate with me at future club events where your contributions will help make possible.

Besides asking our members to donate, we are working on other fundraising ideas.   Again, I am rushing so I can't go into details.

For some of us newbies here, what ongoing costs does the club have, outside of the website?
George is a better person to give details on this.   Here are some costs the club has to incur:
1. Insurance for the club
2. The welcome kit contains, caps, key chains, decals - we have to buy them
3. Ink cartridges for membership kits and club id cards
4. Postage

The top expenses are the welcome kits - the caps we have to replenish almost every other month.  For some of our events, like the DIY, Dyno, Holiday Party, Wine tour, Laughlin and other events - the club provides pizza or other food and drink for our members.  We also spend money on decorations for events as well as supplies

For group buys that the club is now paying for such as the stubby antennas last year and the bowling shirts this year, the club pays a portion of the fees if you paid the club back by Paypal because Paypal takes a percentage.

We also have to pay for other miscellaneous costs - such as the Land's End and MBO setup costs to provide our members with club apparel options.

Most recently, the club spent money on printing out new club business cards - we were very fortunate to have some members help out by paying a portion of the printing costs.

We will also donate some money to other events such as AMVIV because our club typically has the largest representation at these events.

The largest annual expense the club has is our club annual party.  We will subsidize the event to help keep the per ticket price down for our members.  We also purchase some items that are used for our raffle.

There are other expenses and they all add up.

Your donations will help make sure the club continues to function as well as provide our members with fun events and memorable experiences.  The money goes back into the club.

Ok... If anyone has any more questions please feel free to pose them.

Again, thank you to everyone for caring about your club.

Swag, which includes club decals and caps currently, but we've purchased other types of swag in the past like keychains, t-shirts, shot glasses.

We have postage costs associated with the membership welcome packages, along with the cost of the contents of the package.

Other expenses include food and beverages at certain club events, like at the annual Laughlin trip we set up a hospitality suite on Friday night.  At the club's birthday party at Santa Anita, the club pays a large portion of the ticket price for each member.  Last year's actual Santa Anita ticket price was $34 for adults and club members only had to pay $20, the club paid the difference.

The club also buys some raffle prizes they we give away at the Santa Anita event, like a Garmin Nuvi and an Escort radar detector.

Stuff like that is where the money goes.

Edit:  Okay, Lex beat me on getting the post up.  He covered it all pretty much.  Thanks!

Thank you notes cost money. Just post it.
Oh, You just did.  That's enough.
BTW
Do you have a monthly goal for donations?
How about an update on how much you think we need and then more will be added.

Maybe you have raised a million dollars already and we need to spend it on a new MCS for everyone.
We could make them all the same color. I suggest Lightning Blue. Scooter says it's faster.

this is the first i've seen this, i will be sending something soon but what about having a box, bucket or something at our gatherings for donations on the spot. that would help generate more contributions and awareness to our members, that nothing is free  :nono:and our officers do so well planning our outings, they do need something to work with and its not fair if its the same poeple all the time, we all need to pitch in, we all love to have fun! I'll match the challenge made...the one i saw was for 100.00 :sunny:
